Location: Remote, UK based, as travel to our London hub may be required from time to time. Team: Data & Analytics

As Ably enters its next stage of growth, we’re looking for talented and curious engineers to help us build and deliver the platform to power synchronized digital experiences in realtime for one billion devices every month by 2023.

Our everyday digital experiences are in the midst of a realtime revolution. Whether attending an event in a virtual venue, receiving realtime financial information, or monitoring live car performance data – consumers simply expect realtime digital experiences as standard. As such, synchronized data in realtime is now business critical for many organisations. Yet, at the same time, organizations don’t have the in-house capabilities nor the time to do this efficiently at scale. That’s where Ably comes in.

We provide a suite of APIs to build, extend, and deliver powerful digital experiences in realtime for more than 250 million devices across 80 countries each month. Organizations like Toyota, Bloomberg, HubSpot, and Hopin depend on Ably’s platform to offload the growing complexity of business-critical realtime data synchronization at global scale.

Working at Ably means helping to build the infrastructure and technology that will power and shape the future of the internet. The opportunity in front of us is immense. But we can’t rest yet. And we’d like your help.

What we do

Ably’s engineering team is deeply technical, collectively bringing a wealth of experience and broad technology skills across infrastructure, security, distributed systems, and much more. The calibre of the code we produce is what excites and motivates us each day. If you enjoy solving hard distributed system problems that are mostly platform agnostic and theoretical in nature, then you'll love working at Ably.

In this role

Ably is an engineering company at its heart. Our audience ranges from software engineers to CIOs and it’s our job to make sure the world knows about Ably.

You will be responsible for supporting the building of the foundations of Ably’s internal BI and Analytics systems, working closely with our website, realtime, product, operations, marketing and support teams to unlock our data and empower your colleagues to make informed decisions every day. This is a new capability we’re developing at Ably, so you’ll have an opportunity to work on the platform from the earliest moment, and build experience at every stage of the project’s lifecycle.

Day to day, you will:

  • Work closely with the sales, marketing, product, finance and customer success teams to develop and provide access to the tools and data they need to answer key questions and drive their actions to achieve their objectives.
  • Work closely with the data engineers to create suitable views and models of the data our users will be working with, and to define metrics and quality checks to ensure consistency and data quality.
  • Provide training to self-service users to ensure correct adoption of our tools and data sources
  • Support teams in the design of metrics and measurement frameworks
  • Help establish our governance controls, data quality tests, and the tracking of data lineage to ensure we produce high quality, consistent, and understandable data tools.
  • Generate actionable insights through the analysis of our data sources - you may be supporting the analysis of marketing channel performance, developing pricing models, financial forecasting, or segmenting customer types by the product behaviours we see.
  • Work alongside all teams in the company to enhance the quality of the data we collect
  • Have a standup with your team to help everyone stay synchronized

Requirements

It would be great if you have:

  • Delivering BI solutions: You will have been involved in the deployment of effective, scalable, self-service BI solutions. From identifying the user needs, to building tools (such as dashboards, alerts, reports or materialised views) through to navigating the areas of support and training that come ensuring they provide ongoing value.
  • Analysis & Insight: We will be serving teams across the business so you will have experience of defining processes and metrics relevant to various teams (Sales, Marketing, Product, and Finance). You will have a track record of providing valuable insights and analysis that supports decision making and drives action, and you will be a good communicator able to convey information and present recommendations effectively to a variety of teams and levels of seniority.
  • Data Modelling & Manipulation: While SQL is a ‘must have’, you will also have competency with common languages and tools of the modern data stack: python, notebooks, version control, warehouses, and transformation tools. You will be comfortable developing models to live within the warehouse, or accessing and manipulating data for ad-hoc analysis or exploratory work.
  • Data Governance: You will understand the challenges with ensuring data quality through the pipeline and managing discrepancies across sources. You will have had a hand in developing controls and data quality tests, exposure to tools and processes involved in their implementation.

It would be nice if you have:

  • Significant exposure to end-to-end project ownership: you can run discovery processes with stakeholders, scope, plan and deliver solutions that meet their requirements, while being able to deal with various blockers and negotiations along the way.
  • Experience with advanced analysis methods: while we will aim to keep things simple, you won’t be afraid to make use of more sophisticated techniques as required especially across: time series analysis, classification, marketing attribution modelling etc.
  • An interest in/experience with creative, but effective, data visualisations beyond the standard bar, line, and scatter-plot charts.
  • Some understanding/exposure to streaming data tools and processes would be beneficial.
  • Our teams are active open source contributors and are encouraged to do this as part of their role at Ably. We like new team members who enjoy contributing back to the open source community, even if those contributions are small.
  • Good grasp of Agile, Kanban and SCRUM.

What’s it like to work at Ably?

Ably is entering a new phase of growth led by an experienced senior team. You’ll be part of a successful, highly motivated, and extremely collaborative team.

To provide the infrastructure required for the next generation of the internet, to tell the world about it, and to support everyone inside Ably to do so we hire people who are ready and capable of taking on challenging problems in a high-growth environment.

We want to work in a company of inclusive people who treat each other well. To really thrive at Ably, you’ll need to believe in and be prepared to do your work in line with our values, which are:

  • Open for all. Open is a mindset. When open, we’re better collaborators, communicators and creators. Whether open source, standards, or protocols, open hearts, minds, and eyes. It’s better when it’s open.
  • Bias for action. We avoid analysis paralysis at all costs. We lean into doing in order to move us forward. When we have enough of what we need to act, we act.
  • Even the best do better. We want to be the best - but that doesn’t mean we rest when we are. Improvement and growth - true betterment - is an ongoing journey. One fuelled by curiosity and taking risks.
  • Technology needs humanity. Our technology means little without people - whether that’s how we treat our colleagues, or how we design developer experiences. Being human matters.
  • Dependable people make dependable things. Dependability is integral to our mission and technology, but being dependable starts with our people. When we care enough to take real ownership of our products and problems - all else will follow.
  • Bold creativity leads to the greatest rewards. When viewed through a different lens, what stands in the way can become the way. The bigger the challenge the easier the choice: bold creativity will always move us forward, create better outcomes, and set us apart.
