We’re looking for a sharp, self-motivated, problem-solving Backend Engineer to join our team.

As a Ruby on Rails Developer, you’ll work alongside other engineers, designers, and product managers to tackle everything from huge company initiatives to modest but important bug fixes, from start to finish. You’ll also collaborate with your product team on discovery, helping to assess the direction and feasibility of product changes.

Our engineering team is remote-first, spanning every time zone in the United States. We welcome people from all backgrounds and really don't care whether or not you have a CS degree or even a high school diploma. All that matters is that you're not an a**hole and you're good at what you do.

Our Product and Engineering departments also do things a little differently than what you might be used to.

We use a customized version of Basecamp’s Shape Up method (fused with empowered product teams a la Marty Cagan's Inspired) to organize and execute our work. That means you’ll work in a close-knit team consisting of a product manager, a product designer, and other engineers on an area of the product in 3-week cycles.

During cycles you'll spend most of your time implementing product improvements, but you'll also work with your team shaping (generating and vetting) product improvements for the next cycle. After each cycle your team will stop, reset, and choose to tackle another cycle or take a 1-3 week cool-down (a period of undirected work where you’ll pursue educational opportunities, work on pet projects, or smash some bugs that have been nagging at you). Rinse and repeat until code nirvana.

Wait, I think that cool-down thing deserves an extra call out: We build into our process 25% of an engineer's time for undirected work.

Sounds nice, right? No sprinting, no scrumming, no death by 1,000 meetings. We protect our engineers' time, treat them like adults, and trust them to get their work done. We’re also big on not overworking people. Put in your eight hours of focused, quality work and then TURN. SLACK. OFF. No nights and weekends.

Our larger company culture is also refreshingly chill. We have fun, learn from each other, and don’t take ourselves too seriously.

The starting point of our salary band for mid-level engineers is $115,000. The top of our salary band for mid-level engineers is $150,000.

# The Product Engineering Interview Process

Tech interviewing really sucks. We know. That’s why we try to go above and beyond on making sure that you have the best possible experience with us. We want you to have a great experience with us during the interview process.

As we go through the interview process, we work to make sure you hear back from us in a timely fashion. If we decide there’s not such a good fit at some point, we’ll try to give you feedback on why we’re not going forward.
Interview calls are not planned to go longer than 1hr. But, sometimes you’ll get in a good conversation and you both may agree to keep talking.
We strive for the entire process to take around 2-3 weeks from initial screen to offer. There can be exceptions on either side of the bell curve here, but as a rule that’s the time-frame you should expect.

# Requirements

Ably is an engineering company at its heart. Our audience ranges from software engineers to CIOs and it’s our job to make sure the world knows about Ably.

You will be responsible for hands-on development and assisting the web engineering team to deliver our website, developer dashboards, and the next generation of front ends that our customers, developers like yourself, depend on.

## Day to day, you will:

* Have a standup with your team to help everyone stay synchronized

## It would be great if you have:

* Ruby. Two years professional experience using Ruby.
* Rails and web development. Two years professional experience with Rails development. Your focus will primarily be on the frontend, building both vanilla Rails views as well as ones augmented by frameworks.
* Strong HTML, CSS and Javascript. Some knowledge of modern standards (ES6+, CSS Grids, Fetch), best practices (Accessibility, SEO, Performance, Security), frameworks (React, Gatsby, Angular, or ViewComponent), bundling (Webpack) and modern approaches to CSS (Styled Components, TailwindCSS). Deep experience in a few of the aforementioned concepts and technologies is a requirement.
* Architecting frontends. Experience with designing and implementing frontend architectures, like component libraries, SPA’s, and server-side rendered applications.
* Full-stack mindset. You’ve built full-stack applications with CI/CD, as well as understand and promote the importance of the latter.
* Testing strategies. You must have experience with writing automated tests for software with tools like Jest or Cypress.
* Component libraries. Experience building and/or working with a component library.
* Cross-functional team experience. You worked closely with designers and product managers in short, effective feedback loops.
* Good grasp of Agile, Kanban and SCRUM. Working with stakeholders to create and manage backlogs, working with the team to manage the delivery of work

* Experience delivering developer-focussed frontends
* Knowledge of realtime, event-driven and streaming protocols

# What’s the Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer Position Like?

The Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer position is vital to the success of our company, partnering with all departments to align technology strategy with the company’s objectives.

You’ll be responsible for the full software development lifecycle, from conception to deployment building high quality, architecturally sound systems. You will use your initiative to design and implement server-side architecture, as well as implement API’s and integrations that address our business needs. Our small and close knit engineering team currently consists of a UX specialist, 5 engineers and 3 QA specialists. You’ll work closely with the team to implement solutions for all departments within Empire Flippers, be it compliance, customer support, sales and migrations. Additional responsibilities could lead to supervising our engineering team.

# What Skills Do I Need?

We believe in hiring people that are a good fit for us culturally.

A good fit is actually more important to us than the skill set since we will teach you everything you need to know about our industry.

You must have a passion for travel, ideally with long periods of digital nomad experience with travel outside your home country.

* You must have 2+ years of Ruby on Rails experience under your belt, having built RoR applications.
* An in-depth understanding of database management systems, both relational and non-relational databases.
* You should be a ninja with every component of our tech stack. You must have a complete working knowledge of Ruby on Rails, Postgres, Sidekiq, Rspec, Git, Redis.
* Experience working with a wide range of 3rd party integrations. Our platform talks to many 3rd party applications, you should have experience building and maintaining such integrations in a test driven fashion.
* Dev-ops/sysadmin skills, particularly AWS. Experience with managing servers, maintaining hosting environments, being responsible for uptime and responsiveness, addressing bottlenecks, ensuring backups are kept safe and sound.
* You need to have immaculate attention to detail. We need to hear you grunting and moaning if something doesn’t quite look or feel right, to the nearest code change and to the nearest hexadecimal color, to the point you become annoying to us. At times other developers may edit your code, you’ll be watching to ensure the code base remains readable, scalable and fast.
* Be a good communicator. It sounds very cliché, but you’ll immerse yourself in almost every department. You’ll be learning problems and presenting solutions, and overseeing the implementation of those solutions too.
* A self-starter. We need to see some evidence that you’re able to get up every morning, bite the bullet and just get on with it, even if you’ve tried four coffee shops and none have decent wifi. You won’t have eyes looking over your shoulder on a day to day basis, you’ll be working in almost full autonomy. We’ll need to trust you to deliver the goods. We don’t believe in micro-management.

The following skills/experience would be a bonus, but not required:

* PHP/WordPress. We will be interfacing with WordPress significantly, being able to speak the same language would be great.
* React. Our frontend code is built in React, being able to go in and patch things up as and when required would be a big benefit to us. 
* Caching. The software we’re building needs to be fast and to remain fast as we scale, both in terms of traffic and database size. Having experience with Memcached, Varnish or experience with complicated CDN setups with many rules would be a plus.
* CI/CD: We’re huge advocates for automated tests in a continuous fashion, which allows us to rapidly deploy new features every single day without fear of breaking out applications.

# Our technology

Our sole product is the Aha! web application. It is a single-instance, multi-tenant Ruby on Rails monolith supported by Postgres (database), Redis (background jobs), and memcached (Rails caching). We also run a Node.js webserver to support collaborative editing and real-time updates. Our application is hosted on Amazon Web Services and architected with ECS for reproducibility and scalability.

We utilize a growing amount of React on the front end to build rich client-side experiences, including our fully collaborative text editor and our slide presentation editor. We balance the strengths of both technologies — Rails for its conventions and simplicity and React for more powerful interactive functionality.

We embrace new technologies that help us deliver a lovable product, but we also remain cognizant of the maintenance overhead that a new library or platform brings. We solve the problems in front of us rather than prematurely optimizing to address issues that may never materialize.

We do most of our collaboration and planning in Aha! itself, which we find especially rewarding. We also utilize GitHub, Slack, and GoToMeeting for video calls.
